ALBANY, GA (WALB) –Palmyra Medical Center unveiled a new surgical technology tool this evening that's the first of its kind in Georgia
The Stryker Navigation Suite, Palmyra's new state-of-the-art operating room, opened Tuesday.
The navigation computer assisted technology scans and builds 3-D, hi-definition models that aid surgeons in positioning instruments and finding surgical targets.
The system can be used for Neurological, ENT, General, Orthopedic, and Spinal surgeries.
Surgeons say it will allow patients here to stay close to home.
"We wanted to offer the residents of Albany and Dougherty County neurological services so that they wouldn't have to leave Albany and go to Atlanta if they had to have neurosurgery or pituitary surgery," said Dr Harry Weiser. Palmyra Hospital.
There are only 30 units like it nationwide.
The first surgery in the Navigation Suite will take place within the next few days.
